New Star Wars Comics and Books For June 21, 2023

Welcome back to another Star Wars new comic book day preview. On Wednesday, June 21, 2023, there are two new Star Wars comics hitting comic shops.

Kind of a light week on that front but be sure to check out the FOC section below. There are a lot of interesting comics with final order cut-offs this Monday, June 19th. If you pre-order before FOC you won’t want to miss it. 

Ok, let’s dive into everything new coming this week. 

Star Wars: The Mandalorian Season 2 #1 comes out this week and I posted my thoughts and a 5-page preview of this issue here yesterday. In short, the things to know are that it’s the first appearance of Cobb Vanth, and this variant by E.M. Gist of Cobb in Boba Fett’s armor is bananas.

Next up is Star Wars: Bounty Hunters #35. The return of Boba Fett to comics! Bounty Hunters 35 is the start of a new era by Ethan Sacks for this run. Author Ethan Sacks has reshuffled our main crew and it now consists of Boba, Durge, Khel Tanna, and Death Stick to go along with Beilert Valance, Zuckuss, and Tonga. 

I think this was needed as this series has gotten a bit stale. I rarely hear people talk about it. This should NOT be the case regarding a series about Bounty Hunters. 

One interesting note about this issue is that the publisher’s description for Star Wars: Bounty Hutners #36 (next issue) teases a conflict between Boba Fett and the Black Sun Syndicate. I’d bet that conflict is introduced in this issue to set everything up. This COULD be the first full appearance of Prince Xizor in canon.

The Black Sun leader that looks exactly like Xizor shows up in a hologram in Star Wars: Hidden Empire #1. But it’s not confirmed to be him as he was not named. He also only appears in a single panel. 

As for the Star Wars comics with a FOC deadline this Monday, there are 4. 

• Star Wars: Doctor Aphra 34
• Star Wars: Dark Droids #1
• Star Wars: Return of the Jedi – The Rebellion #1
• Star Wars: #35 2nd Print

I personally like the Star Wars: Dark Droids Foil variant with R2-D2 because it’s been AGES since a Star Wars comic had a foil cover. 10-15 years at least.  But honestly every cover for Dark Droids #1 is a winner. The artists crushed it in my opinion.

Also, Doctor Aphra 34 will reintroduce a super strange species called “The Starwierd” into Star Wars canon. The Kyle Hotz variant for that is absolutely incredible. 

Lastly, Star Wars: Return of the Jedi – The Rebellion #1 teases an “unknown assassin” that tries to kill Kes Dameron and Shara Bey (Poe Dameron’s parents). Could be a new character but I have no real insight saying that it will be or wont be.

Star Wars Comic Book FOC Deadlines

For those who aren’t familiar, FOC, or Final Order Cut Off, is when publishers and distributors require retailers to get their orders in. Printers then print according to that number (sometimes with overages). So, if you want to absolutely guarantee you get a book, the best bet is to order it before FOC. Final Order Cut Off is Monday 6/19/23 this week.
