New Star Wars Comics & Books Coming July 19th, 2023

Welcome back to another Star Wars new comic book day preview! Next week there are two new Star Wars comics and an adult novel hitting stores near and far.

Let’s take a look…

Star Wars: Doctor Aphra #34 – The STARWEIRD! The Starweird are a ridiculously named species that floats around in space (similar to a purrgil) and has a strong connection to the dark side of the force. At least I think they do, it’s a pretty obscure species that was originally created for role-playing game that came out in the 2000s.

While I don’t love the name the creature is pretty sick looking and spooky as all hell. The Starweird first appeared in comics in last month’s Doctor Aphra #33. I think it was a significant enough appearance to call it the Starweird’s first full appearance, but that’s for the market to decide.

I’m personally getting the Kyle Hotz variant as it shares the first cover appearance with the cover A and I like the art better. Hyle Hotz is incredible. I’ll also be getting the Jerry Ordway “classic trade dress” variant because I’m a sucker for retro comic covers.

Star Wars: Return of the Jedi – The Rebellion #1 – I honestly don’t know much about this issue other than it will feature Poe Dameron’s parents, Kes Dameron and Shara Bey, and that it has some really cool Mon Mothma variants. I’ve enjoyed these ROTJ one-shots so far. They’ve been fun one-off stories about the events leading up to the movie.

Star Wars: The Rise of the Red Blade by Deliah S. Dawson also hits shelves next week (Tuesday, not Wednesday) and will dive deep into the lives of two Jedi who turned into inquisitors after Order 66. Looking forward to learning more about the culture and inner workings of the Inquisitorious.

As for the Star Wars comics with a FOC deadline this Monday, there are 3.

Star Wars Comic Book FOC Deadlines

For those who aren’t familiar, FOC, or Final Order Cut Off, is when publishers and distributors require retailers to get their orders in. Printers then print according to that number (sometimes with overages). So, if you want to absolutely guarantee you get a book, the best bet is to order it before FOC. Final Order Cut Off is Monday 7/17/23 this week.
