Welcome back to another Star Wars new comic book day preview! On Wednesday, June 28, 2023, there are FIVE new Star Wars comics and a few trade paperbacks hitting comic shops.
Let’s take a look…
Star Wars: Darth Vader – Black, White, & Red #3 comes out this week and I don’t have too much to say about it. The “Hard Shutdown” story by Jason Aaron that continues through each issue has been fun. Watching people who think they have the upper hand on Vader find out just how wrong they are never gets old.
Star Wars: Doctor Aphra #33 will continue Aphra and Luke’s adventure through a long forgotten jedi temple that somehow has Aayla Secura and Shaak Ti. Now, I don’t believe the author is resurrecting these two. They both died during Order 66.
It’s more likely some sort of force vision or imprint that allows Luke and Aphra to interact with what they believe are two Jedi.
Two notable things about this issue are that the cover David Marquez Aalya Secura variant is amazing and that this COULD be the first introduction of the Starweird into canon. They’re a crazy monster looking species that can interact with the Force and were first introduced in the original Marvel run.
The Starweird on on covers for Star Wars: Doctor Aphra #34 but they could get a sneaky intro here to set up next issue.
Then lastly we are getting the final 3 issues of Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures this week from Dark Horse Comics. High Republic Adventures issues 6, 7 & 8 will wrap up phase II and Sav Malagan’s rescue of Maxz Kanata.
I’ve read these and can’t do spoilers. But I will say that the story has a proper ending that satisfies the arc but I wish it connected more to the rest of the phase.
Trade Paperbacks for Star Wars: Darth Vader Vol 6 by Greg Pak and Star Wars: The High Republic – The Blade by Charles Soule are also out this week.
As for the Star Wars comics with a FOC deadline this Monday, there are 6.

Star Wars Comic Book FOC Deadlines
For those who aren’t familiar, FOC, or Final Order Cut Off, is when publishers and distributors require retailers to get their orders in. Printers then print according to that number (sometimes with overages). So, if you want to absolutely guarantee you get a book, the best bet is to order it before FOC. Final Order Cut Off is Monday 6/26/23 this week.
