There’s a great little book by Joel Waldfogel called Scroogenomics: Why You Shouldn’t Buy Presents for the Holidays. It’s main point is that “outsourcing” the purchasing of goods for others is inefficient from an economic standpoint. i.e. If I have a dollar, presumably nobody knows my needs and wants better than myself and, therefore, I am the best person to maximize my enjoyment based on the goods I choose to purchase. Scroogenomics is a great read around the holidays and isn’t nearly as big a bummer as it sounds. Waldfogel fills the book with enough humor to make you realize that his completely valid argument is somewhat tongue-in-cheek.
Now, this book is enough to make me want to tell my loved ones to fend for themselves this season. However, I have chosen to take the message of the book as a challenge. My presents will no longer go the way of the Big Mouth Billy Bass, regifted or droning slowly in an abandoned corner of the garage, running off a depleted battery from 2003. I strive to reach to new gift giving heights! I also hope the same thing for you.
