It’s new comic book day and aside from new comic books, it also means new previews for next week’s issues! And right on time, courtesy of StarWars.com, we got an exclusive 5 page preview of Darth Vader #28 that comes out next Wednesday, October 19th.
I believe this will be considered the first official crossover issue in the Star Wars: Hidden Empire comic event. You can see the full reading order and every variant for that storyline here.
In the preview Sabé, now an Imperial commander for some reason, tells Vader/Anakin two things.
- That Padme said that there was still good in Anakin. We know from previous issues that Sabé was in the room when Luke and Leia were born. Meaning she was there when Padme died. But before Padme died she said this line Obi-Wan. This sends Vader into a rage and ruins a perfectly good bacta tank.
- That Palpatine himself ordered Govenor Tauntaza to create her planet draining machine. The machine that Vader has spent the last few issues working with Sabé, Kitster, and Wald to destroy. All nearly dying in the process. So Vader does what Vader usually does and storms off to confront Palaptine. Where he will undoubtedly get backhanded and yield as his master Alphas him.
Let me say this, Darth Vader and Anakin’s friendship confuses me. Her entire post-Padme life has been centered around finding and killing the person her “killed” Padme. It does not make sense to me that her and Vader would continue to work together for this long. By now Vader should have killed her. Or, if she reminded him too much of Padme, then she should have killed him by now.
This just seems farfetched that her arc would end up with her becoming an Imperial Commander working under Vader. One who’s sole responsibility seems to be to remind him about Padme. How she was too good for him.
I get it. This run is supposed to humanize Vader. To show signs of Anakin resurfacing as he spends time with the closest thing to Padme that exists in the galaxy. I believe this is to add more context to Vader turning on Palpatine in The Return of the Jedi.
Just feels a little forced.
So check out the preview, get your pre-orders in, and I’ll see you in 7 days to talk about key moments in the story.
