Star Wars: The Acolyte - Kelnacca #1 Preview

Star Wars: The Acolyte – Kelnacca #1 by Cavan Scott and Marika Cresta comes out THIS WEDNESDAY, September 4th, 2024, and at the bottom of this post, you’ll find 6-page preview from Marvel Comics.

And BOY AM I AMPED FOR THIS ONE. Let’s take a look at the preview…

Star Wars: The Acolyte – Kelnacca #1 is a one-shot comic intended to provide backstory for Jedi Master Kelnacca who unforunately met a violent end in the the first (and only) season of Star Wars: The Acolyte. Regardless of how you feel about that show, I think we can all agree that Wookiee Jedi are amazing. Actually, if you disagree, then we may not be able to be friends.

I didn’t love the way Kelnacca went out on in The Acolyte but I do think it was a decent narrative choice to show Qimir’s power and provide a “shocker” type moment for watchers. So, I don’t love it but I get it.

That being said I’m happy they’re continueing his story in comics and (probably) books. Wookiees live for ~400 years so it would be silly to leave his backstory a mystery. My guy has seen A LOT and this comic is just the start of his story for Star Wars fans.

First Appearances in Star Wars: The Acolyte – Kelnacca #1

I have not read the full book but this issue is a clear key issue for me. From the preview alone there are three first appearances.

First Comic Appearance Lulad and Yarzon Vell

First comic book appearance of Jedi Master Kelnacca – My boy Kelnacca get’s his paper debut in this and even though The Acolyte isn’t getting a 2nd season (at the moment) I don’t think the High Republic is done getting screentime. We’ll eventually be getting more shows and at least one video game from the era and I’d bet Kelnacca is involved in some way.
The first comic book appearance of Jedi Master Vell – The preview starts out with Lulad talking to her Padawan while she is on the brink of becoming one with the Force. Based on the preview it appears that they becomes Kelnacca’s apprentice. As far as I know, Vell has not appeared in any other book or media at this point.
First comic book appearance of Lulad – Lulad may be the most interesting first appearance from this book. She’s Varzion’s Padawan nearly 100 years after the fall of Starlight Beacon. Meaning she is a Padawan during the events of Star Wars: The Acolyte. I understand that the Acolyte isn’t going to get a 2nd season but I wouldn’t be shocked if the story is picked up years from now if it ends up aging well. Even if it’s not actually called The Acolyte Season 2 and instead has a different title. Yarzion would be a prime candidate to appear in any new show from that time period (132 BBY).

As always, when I mention first appearances, key issues, or comic speculation, I am not advocating that you go out and load up on a certain book. Just sharing my honest thoughts. Your money is yours and you should only spend it on things you want.
