One of the biggest mysteries since Star Wars Return of the Jedi his theaters in 1983 was, “Where in the hell did Luke Skywalker get his green lightsaber?” We all saw Luke’s hand get lopped off by his daddy on Cloud City in Empire Strikes Back causing his (I mean Anakin’s) lightsaber to fall out of sight, not to be seen again until Maz Kanata gives it to Rey in Star Wars The Force Awakens.
While there is a deleted scene from Return of the Jedi that shows Luke working on his new green saber we don’t have an official backstory about where he got the kyber crystal. Or who’s it was if he didn’t find it in the wild?
Based on the preview of next week’s Star Wars #34 by Charles Soule, it appears we’re about to find out. The preview shows Luke reading Jedi texts/instruction manual about lightsabers, kyber crystals, and the special connection each crystal has with its owner. The cover A also shows Luke holding a green kyber crystal implying that it’s finally going to be revealed the crystal’s origin.

A popular fan theory is that Luke finds the green kyber crystal in Obi-Wan’s old home on Tatooine and that it belongs to the goat and Obi-Wan’s former master Qui-Gon Jinn. Now, in the preview Luke does mention that he needs to find his OWN crystal. This way he’ll form a bond with it like the Jedi from the past. That could rule out the Qui-Gon theory. Though, there is a pretty badass Darth Maul variant from the Phantom Menace for this issue.
This also tells me that we are nearing the start of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. Thanks to our hero’s efforts in no-space the Rebel fleet now has the fuel needed to launch an attack on the Death Star and Luke is constructing his saber that debuts in Jabba’s Palace in Return of the Jedi.
I for one am ready for some New Republic comics. I think we wrap up the pre ROTJ era this year on the 40th anniversary of the movie’s release and start in the New Republic (or other eras) starting next year.
