Mattel and Lucasfilm announced a new collaboration yesterday- Star Wars Barbies! It’s actually strange to think this hasn’t been done in all the years of Star Wars memorabilia production. However, given the strong ties Lucasfilm had to Kenner, then Hasbro, and the competitiveness the of the licensing negotiations during the late 90s, it is understandable that Mattel was thrown clear from the fray all those years.
Mattel starts with a strong line up of core characters: Darth Vader, R2-D2, and Princess Leia.
Each dolls looks pretty well thought out to be honest. There are some creative takes on a lot of the classic costume elements.
Darth’s hairstyle resembles a helmeted head, with Devil Wears Prada glasses to conceal Annie-kin(?)’s true visage. Princess Leia, rather than just don the classic hair buns, get a little more elegant twist to her hair style and some added flow to her gown. Leia’s boots are a little fancier than the rebel princess’ originals as well. R2 is just retro futuristic from head to toe with the Bowie-esque eye paint, the clear hoop skirt, and the patterned knee-high boots. Nice job, Mattel.
Each doll is suitable for adult collectors, retails right around $100 and can be ordered directly through Mattel, Entertainment Earth, or Amazon for a November 2019 delivery!
It will be interesting to see if this line continues. What other characters would they introduce? Chewie? Would that just look like the bearded lady?
